KELOWNA, February 10, 2014 - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 Monday afternoon at Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia.
The game had a special start time of 2pm on the Family Day Holiday in British Columbia. The T-Birds finish 2-1-0-1 in four games against the Rockets this season.
Seattle (35-17-2-3) has won 13 of their last 16 games and faces the Tri-City Americans on Friday at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center. They travel to Everett to play the Silvertips at Comcast Arena on Saturday at 7:05pm. They host the Prince George Cougars on Sunday at 5:05pm at ShoWare Center.
Kelowna (44-8-0-4) took a 1-0 lead at 2:56 of the first period. Tyrel Goulbourne carried the puck into the T-Birds zone on the right side. He cut to towards the slot and his shot hit a T-Birds defenseman in the skate. The puck came right back to Goulbourne as skated to the left of the Seattle net. Goulbourne beat Seattle goalie Taran Kozun over the blocker. Colten Martin and Damon Severson had the assists.
The Rockets went in front 2-0 on a power-play goal from Ryan Olsen at 11:03 of the first. Olsen beat Kozun from the right circle when he one-timed a pass from Severson past the goalie. Myles Bell had the second assist.
Kelowna outshot Seattle 16-10 in the first period.
Bell struck for a power-play goal 19 seconds into the second period to give the Rockets a 3-0 lead. Madison Bowey and Tyson Baillie had the assists.
Kelowna made it a 4-0 game at 7:28 when Colten Heffley converted on pass form Olsen behind the Seattle net.
Danny Mumaugh replaced Kozun after the fourth Kelowna goal. Kozun had 15 saves on 19 shots and his record is now 14-21-2-1.
Marek Tvrdon scored from a sharp angle at 10:09 of the second to give the Rockets a 5-0 lead. Riley Stadel and Mitchell Wheaton were credited with the assists.
Nick Merkley put back a rebound from his own shot to make it a 6-0 Rockets lead at 5:35 of the third period. Goulbourne drove down the right wing, cut towards the net and centered the puck to Merkley in the slot. Merkely's first shot was stopped by Mumaugh but the second shot got by the goalie.
Seattle got on the board at 6:35 of the third. Shea Theodore passed the puck to Branden Troock who carried the puck down the left wing. He passed the puck to Jerret Smith in the right circle. Smith beat Kelowna goalie Jackson Whistle with a wrist shot over the glove.
The T-Birds cut the Rockets lead to four at 8:20 of the third. Calvin Spencer passed the puck from the right circle to Ethan Bear at the right point. Bear put a slap shot on goal that beat Whistle over the glove. Alexander Delnov had the second assist on the goal.
Goulbourne scored shorthanded goal at 14:13 of the third to get the Rockets seventh goal. Cole Linaker had the only assist.
Delnov snapped a wrist shot past Whistle at 14:36 of third from the right circle to get the T-Birds third goal. Jaimen Yakubowski and Russell Maxwell had assists on the power-play goal.
Kelowna outshot Seattle 39-30 in the game.
Mumaugh made 17 saves on 20 shots in the loss.
Kelowna goalie Jackson Whistle stopped 27 of 30 shots and his record is now 14-3-0-0.
