TACOMA, Wash. – Former Rainiers pitcher Matt Fox tossed six shutout innings as the Las Vegas 51s dealt Tacoma a 4-1 loss at Cheney Stadium on Sunday. The defeat seals a series loss for Tacoma in the final meeting between the two clubs this season.
Fox, the Rainiers 2012 Opening Day starter, silenced Tacoma to three hits and no runs on the way picking up his third win of the season. The right-hander walked one and struck out six.
The 51s pulled ahead 2-0 after posting a two-run inning in the second. Outfielder Jamie Hoffman hit an RBI double that scored Ike Davis, and Francisco Pena added another run after hitting into a ground out that plated Brandon Hicks.
Tacoma’s deficit doubled after allowing two more runs in the fifth inning. Outfielder Eric Campbell lined a double to right field that cleared the way for both Davis and Hoffman to score with two outs.
The Rainiers lone run did not arrive until the bottom of the seventh inning. Scott Savastano singled to right field, scoring outfielder Stefen Romero from third base.
Tacoma combined to tally six hits in the series finale. Nate Tenbrink and Rich Poythress combined to account for two-thirds of that total after each turned in 2-for-4 efforts.
Starting pitcher Brandon Maurer (2-2) was dealt the loss after allowing all four of the 51s runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks issued over 4.2 innings. Brian Sweeney (3.1 IP) and Josh Kinney (1.0 IP) combined to strikeout five over 4.1 innings out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (48-36) open the final leg of an 11-game homestand when the Colorado Springs Sky Sox head to Cheney Stadium to begin a three-game series at 7 p.m. tomorrow, July 1. Seattle Mariners top pitching prospect Taijuan Walker (1-0, 0.00) will make his second career start with Tacoma against Sky Sox right-hander Jeff Manship (3-6, 6.33).
