Recap: The Mariners fell to the Yankees 6-1, with all of the Yankees runs coming in the 3rd inning.
Aaron Harang got his 1500th career strikeout in the 1st inning facing Mark Teixeira, but that was about the only highlight of the night for him. Harang gave up 8 hits, 6 earned runs and came out in the 3rd inning after throwing only 56 pitches. Harang got the loss and fell to 2-6.
Blake Beavan was the surprise of the game, coming in to relieve Harang in the 3rd. Beavan gave up one hit and struck out four, keeping the Yankees scoreless through his 6 and 2/3 innings of work. Beavan was only the 2nd Mariner reliever in history to go 6 2/3 innings; the first was John Montague on July 24, 1977.
Phil Hughes got the win for the Yankees going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run and striking out 7.
Turning Point: The turning point in the game came in the 3rd inning when Robinson Cano hit a three-run home run, to start the Yankees offensive explosion. They tallied 8 hits and 6 runs off of Harang; it was at that point that Beavan came on in relief.
Kyle Seager led the Mariners with two hits ( a single and a double) and an RBI, scoring Brendan Ryan in the 8th. Ryan got on base all three at bats, reaching on a single, a walk and a fielder’s choice.
Player of the game: The player of the game has to go to Phil Hughes for his superior pitching performance for the Yankees. Offensively the Yankees were great as well, so we can give an offensive player of the game to Robinson Cano for his three run homer.
Up Next: The Mariners and Yankees return to Safeco Field for a 7:10 game tomorrow night. Jeremy Bonderman (0-1, 13.50) gets the start for the M’s with Hiroki Kuroda (6-4, 2.59) throwing for the Yankees.
Draft notes: The Mariners drafted two players in the 1st two rounds of the 2013 Draft today, DJ Peterson, a 3rd baseman out of the University of New Mexico and outfielder, Austin Wilson from Stanford.
Tom McNamara says he is confident in the signability of both DJ Peterson and Austin Wilson. McNamara spoke with media for about 7 minutes on both players; podcast is HERE.
