EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips controlled the early portion of the game but were unable to build a lead before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Prince George Cougars Saturday night at Comcast Arena. The regulation loss was Everett’s first in a span of eight games, concluding a long stretch of home dates ahead of their Central Division road trip. Netting the Silvertips’ only goal of the game was leading scorer Josh Winquist, who extended his point streak to 12 games with 28 points in that span. Manraj Hayer and Matt Pufahl picked up the helpers on the Everett goal, which tied the game at one in the second period on the powerplay. Brett Zarowny (2-7-1-1) earned first star honors after stopping 34 shots in goal for the Cougars. Everett outshot Prince George 15-3 in the first period, keeping the Cougars off the shot clock through the first eight minutes of the game. Prince George goaltender Brett Zarowny managed a number of key saves in the period, robbing Manraj Hayer on the doorstep during a Silvertips powerplay with likely the best of his 15 stops. Everett finished 0 for 2 on the powerplay in the frame to leave the game scoreless after 20 minutes. The Cougars opened the scoring seven minutes into the second. Alex Forsberg rushed the puck into the ‘Tips zone and slid a pass through a redirection across to Chase Witala, whose shot from the high slot made it between the legs of Austin Lotz. The Silvertips responded less than five minutes later on the powerplay as Josh Winquist fired a shot from the left boards that deflected off a player in front and into the net. Shots on goal were 25-12 and the score was tied at one heading into the final period. The Silvertips outshot the Cougars 10-5 in the third, but were unable to break the tie before a remarkable effort from Troy Bourke put Prince George ahead to stay. Skating the puck into the Everett zone against two defensemen, Bourke stickhandled from the right boards into the low slot before roofing a shot over a sprawled Lotz with 4:19 remaining. The ‘Tips pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker in the final minutes, but Witala’s empty net goal would give the visitors a two-goal lead and provide the final 3-margin. Goaltender Austin Lotz (10-3-1-0) turned away 14 shots in net as the Silvertips outshot the Cougars 35-17. Everett scored once on four powerplay opportunities and stopped the Cougars on all three of their chances.
The Silvertips will now embark on the second leg of their Central Division road swing, playing four games over a span of five nights next week. Everett starts the trip in Cranbrook, BC, where they face the Kootenay Ice Tuesday night at 6:00 pm Pacific time. Pregame coverage starts at 5:30 pm on Fox Sports 1380 AM. The ‘Tips will then visit Lethbridge on Wednesday, Medicine Hat on Friday and Calgary next Saturday before returning home to host the Saskatoon Blades at Comcast Arena on Saturday, November 30.
