EDMONTON, AB – Josh Winquist and Matt Pufahl notched two goals apiece to lead the Everett Silvertips over the Edmonton Oil Kings by a 4-2 final score Wednesday night at Rexall Place. The win puts the Silvertips’ record at 5-1-1-0 for year, including a 4-0 mark on the road with Everett’s first long road swing set to conclude this weekend in Prince George.
In his final junior game near his hometown of St. Albert, Alberta, Winquist gave the ‘Tips a 2-1 lead with six minutes to go in the first period. That score remained unchanged until the final minute, when the teams traded goals in a furious scramble before Everett sealed the 4-2 win. Rookie defenseman Kevin Davis notched his first career point with an assist, while Austin Lotz (4-1-1-0) was again solid in net with numerous key saves among his 28 for the night.
It took less than 90 seconds for the Silvertips to open the scoring, with Matt Pufahl’s point shot bouncing off Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry and inching its way over the goal line to give the ‘Tips a 1-0 lead. The Oil Kings answered on the game’s first powerplay minutes later as a Cody Corbett shot from the blueline found its way past a screened Austin Lotz to even things at one.
Edmonton nearly took the lead on a great scoring chance from Curtis Lazar, who received a pass in the slot and cut to his backhand before being denied by a sprawling Lotz. The Silvertips re-took the lead later in the first as video review confirmed that Josh Winquist had fired the rebound of a Ben Betker shot over the goal line from a sharp angle at 14:01 to put the visitors on top 2-1 after one.
The teams traded powerplay chances in the second period, with neither team managing to alter the score despite three powerplays a side. The opportunities came in quick succession and often overlapped with 4-on-4 play as the teams took turns taking penalties. Edmonton outshot Everett 10-6 in the middle stanza, but the Silvertips still led 2-1 through 40 minutes.
It looked as though that score might hold up throughout the third, especially when Lotz forced Henrik Samuelsson to shoot wide during a 2-on-1 rush. Things got interesting after Edmonton pulled Tristan Jarry for an extra attacker however. With 30 seconds to go, Pufahl sent the puck the length of the ice from behind his own net into the empty Oil Kings’ net for his second goal of the game to make it 3-1. The Oil Kings quickly cut the edge back to one as Corbett scored his second on a deflected cross-ice pass with 17 seconds left. Jarry was still on the bench 11 seconds after that when Winquist gathered in a loose puck at the Everett blueline and backhanded it in for the Silvertips’ second empty-net goal to complete the 4-2 victory.
The ‘Tips went scoreless on five powerplay opportunities, while the Oil Kings finished 1 for 5. Tristan Jarry (3-5) took the loss in goal despite 27 saves as Everett outshot Edmonton 31-30 for the night.
