EVERETT – Four unanswered goals in the second period solidified victory for the Everett Silvertips, who defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 Friday night at Comcast Arena. The win kept the ‘Tips unbeaten in preseason action through six games with team traveling to Kent Saturday night to face the T-Birds again in their final exhibition game.
Brayden Low led all scorers with three points on the night (1g/2a), giving him nine points in five preseason appearances. Manraj Hayer registered a goal and an assist to take over sole possession of the league lead in preseason scoring lead with 11 points (5g/6a) in five games. Defensemen Micheal Zipp (1g/1a) and Matt Pufahl (2a) also tacked on multi-point efforts, while Tyler Sandhu and Ivan Nikolishin also scored goals.
Everett was first on the board with a powerplay goal as Brayden Low put a seamless backhand shot into the corner of the net off a rebound. Late in the period Justin Hickman dropped a pass in front to Matthew Barzal, who tapped it in for the T-Birds to tie the game at one. Seattle took the lead with a minute left in the period when Curtis Honey picked up a rebound and slid it to Alexander Delnov for a goal to make it 2-1. The ‘Tips outshot the Thunderbirds 14-9 through the first 20 minutes of play.
The Silvertips regained the lead in the second period with four unanswered goals. Manraj Hayer tied it for the ‘Tips with a shorthanded breakaway goal as he moved around a defenseman and tucked the puck between the legs of goaltender Danny Mumaugh. Everett took a 3-2 lead four minutes later when Micheal Zipp fired a wrist shot inside the post from the top of the circle. Zipp’s lead pass to Josh Winquist set up the ‘Tips fourth goal after Winquist centered the puck to a streaking Tyler Sandhu, who made a move and slid home his second preseason goal. A scramble in front of the net just over one minute later saw Ivan Nikolishin lift his own rebound over the pad of Mumaugh to give Everett a 5-2 lead heading into the dressing room. The Silvertips led 32-14 on the shot clock after two.
Seattle got one goal back midway through the third as Roberts Lipsbergs picked the top corner over Austin Lotz’s glove. With the net empty for an extra attacker in the last 90 seconds, the Thunderbirds pulled within 5-4 when Connor Honey quickly fired in a centering pass from Branden Troock. Lotz then made several key saves in the final minutes to help the ‘Tips retain the lead before time expired.
Everett finished with 45 shots on net, compared to 25 for the T-Birds. Lotz (3-0-0-0) stopped 21 shots to earn the victory in goal. Danny Mumaugh (0-1-0-0) stopped 40 shots while taking the loss for Seattle. The Silvertips converted 1 of 2 powerplays while holding the Thunderbirds scoreless on three chances.
