Reid Petryk recorded his 13th goal of the season in the second period, pulling the ‘Tips within 3-1 at the time with his 100th career WHL point. Kohl Bauml and Manraj Hayer picked assists on the score. Edmonton’s top-ranked powerplay unit contributed three goals on seven opportunities, while Everett was scoreless on a pair of chances.
The ‘Tips couldn’t capitalize on good scoring chances in the first, but trailed just 1-0 after the opening period. Dylan Wruck found Curtis Lazar open for a one-timer on the weak side during the first Oil Kings powerplay to open scoring in the game at 5:42. Everett successfully killed off a second penalty in the first to keep it a one-goal game after 20 minutes. Shots on goal were 14-9 in favor of the Oil Kings.
Martin Gernat made the lead 2-0 on Edmonton’s third powerplay early in the second period, cutting in from the blue line and banging the puck between the legs of goaltender Daniel Cotton. Gernat poked in a back-door feed for his second of the night minutes later to give the Oil Kings a 3-0 edge. The ‘Tips got on the board a short time later thanks to a nice passing sequence started by Manraj Hayer’s pass to spring Kohl Bauml on the rush. Bauml then dropped the puck into the slot for Reid Petryk, who lifted a shot over the shoulder of Tristan Jarry from below the hash marks to make it 3-1.
Unfortunately for Everett, the momentum didn’t last as Trevor Cheek tapped in a pass from Michael St. Croix at the far post two minutes later to put Edmonton back on top by three. The Silvertips killed off a two-minute 5-on-3 powerplay for the visitors and then began pressuring for another goal late in the period, but Griffin Reinhart slipped a point shot through traffic and then Cotton’s five-hole with 29 seconds left to send the Oil Kings into intermission with a 5-1 advantage.
A physical third period didn’t benefit the ‘Tips as the Kings tacked on two more goals. Trevor Cheek scored his second of the night on the powerplay at 4:43 and then Cody Corbett completed the scoring a short time later for a 7-1 final tally.
Daniel Cotton (9-18-0-2) stopped 32 of 39 shots in just over 46 minutes before being replaced in goal by Austin Lotz, who finished the game strong with 13 saves on 13 shots in 13:34 on the ice. Tristan Jarry (16-7-0-0) turned away 26 shots to earn the win as Edmonton outshot the ‘Tips 52-27 in total.
