Reid Petryk led the way with three assists for the ‘Tips, who led 4-1 midway through the contest after an outburst of four goals in just over four minutes. Dawson Leedahl recorded his first multi-point game with a goal and an assist, while Trent Lofthouse posted the same stat line and scored the goal that put Everett ahead 5-4 in the third period. Manraj Hayer, Kohl Bauml and Ty Mappin also scored goals for the Silvertips, while Brendan Leipsic scored four times for Portland.
The teams combined for only 16 shots in a fairly tight-checking first period, and Portland opened the scoring with a powerplay goal on Taylor Leier’s deflection in front at 8:15. Everett tied the game later in the period as Manraj Hayer set up a chance in front for Trent Lofthouse, whose initial shot was stopped before Hayer poked the rebound between Brendan Burke’s pads to even things at one. Less than one minute later and with only 35 seconds left in the frame, Reid Petryk sped down the right boards in the Portland zone before whipping a perfect pass out front to Dawson Leedahl, who re-directed it into the top corner to give Everett a 2-1 edge after one.
The Silvertips scored two more quick goals to open the second period, first when Leedahl circled the ‘Hawks net and fed Kohl Bauml in front for his tenth goal of the year from the slot. Ty Mappin then knocked home the rebound of a Carson Stadnyk shot exactly one minute later, and the ‘Tips held a 4-1 lead after scoring four times in just 4:09 of clock time.
Brendan Leipsic single-handedly brought the Winterhawks back before the period ended however, recording a natural hat trick to tie the game. Leipsic scored on the powerplay at 8:44, stole a puck at the Portland blueline and converted the ensuing breakaway at 16:55 and then tapped in a cross-ice pass in front at 18:37 to even things at four through 40 minutes.
After killing off a Winterhawks powerplay to open the third, Everett pulled back in front when Petryk’s lead pass created a breakaway for Lofthouse, who scored on a top-shelf backhander to make it 5-4. The ‘Tips held the lead throughout most of the period, thanks in part to a highlight-reel save from Austin Lotz, who stretched out across the crease to rob a one-timer during a Portland powerplay. The ‘Hawks were on the man-advantage again when Leipsic scored his fourth of the night at 16:09 to even the score at five. Troy Rutkowski’s screened wrist shot from the point snuck through traffic and into the net just 40 seconds later to put the Winterhawks ahead 6-5. Leier then added an insurance tally at 18:07 in Portland’s 7-5 win.
Austin Lotz (3-10-0-1) stopped 33 shots in a losing effort, including 17 in the third period alone as the Silvertips were outshot 40-24 in total. Brendan Burke (8-3-1-0) made 19 saves in the win. Portland scored three powerplay goals on five opportunities, while the ‘Tips failed to convert their only chance of the night.
The Silvertips are back on home ice for two more rivalry games this weekend at Comcast Arena. The Seattle Thunderbirds make their second appearance of the year in Everett Friday night at 7:35 on Law Enforcement Appreciation Night before the ‘Tips take on the Vancouver Giants on Scout Night Saturday at 7:05 pm.
