Cole MacDonald recorded the ‘Tips only goal in the contest, scoring his first career WHL tally in the third period to break-up Brendan Burke’s shutout bid. Everett was outshot by only four in the contest as Portland finished with a 34-30 edge on the shot clock. Daniel Cotton (8-7-0-0) stopped 30 shots in net for the Silvertips.
The Winterhawks came away with a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Derrick Pouliot started things off during a powerplay just over two minutes in, skating down the right side past a fallen Everett defenseman and firing a shot over Daniel Cotton’s shoulder. Portland added a second tally mid-way through the period as Tyler Wotherspoon snuck a long shot into the net from just outside the ‘Tips blueline. Shots after the first period were 11-9 in favor of the Winterhawks.
The ‘Hawks added to their lead early in the second on a 2-on-1 rush after Cotton stopped the initial shot from Ty Rattie before Brendan Leipsic banged in the rebound. Everett gained momentum as the period progressed on a few good chances, but wasn’t able to cut into the deficit and then Rattie scored on a deflection in front with only 18 seconds left to make it 4-0 Portland.
Cole MacDonald scored the only goal of the third period, getting a pass from Kohl Bauml in the corner and whipping a wrist shot past Brendan Burke to get the ‘Tips on the board with 6:31 remaining in the game. Manraj Hayer was stopped on a penalty shot with just over three minutes left as the Winterhawks finished out the 4-1 victory.
The ‘Tips shut down 4 of 5 Portland powerplays, but were scoreless on four opportunities of their own. Brendan Burke (7-3-1-0) stopped 29 of 30 shots in net for the Winterhawks.
The Silvertips will face the Winterhawks again on Tuesday night as they make their second visit of the year to Portland for a 7:00 pm opening puck drop. Everett will then host two more home games next weekend at Comcast Arena, battling the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday and the Vancouver Giants on Saturday.
