Fells did not play college football but was a college basketball power forward at UC Irvine from 2004-08, playing in 123 games and averaging 10.2 points on 53% shooting and 6.3 rebounds per game. He has played professional basketball overseas in Belgium, Finland and Argentina.

Fells is the younger brother of New England Patriots tight end, Daniel Fells.
