TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers dropped the team’s season finale 9-6 to the Sacramento River Cats at Cheney Stadium on Monday.
Carlos Triunfel and Joe Dunigan were responsible for providing an early 3-0 lead for the Rainiers in the bottom of the first inning. The shortstop Triunfel lined a two-run double that plated Xavier Avery and Stefen Romero, and Dunigan tacked on a single that cleared the way for Triunfel to score.
The River Cats rebounded to take the lead with a four-run frame in the top of the second. Hiroki Nakajima’s run-scoring single and Jake Goebbert’s two-run home run evened the score at 3-3. Addison Russell scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error committed by right fielder Joe Dunigan.
Tacoma’s James Jones delivered an RBI double that evened the game at 4-4 in the third inning, only to have Sacramento take back the lead for good with three runs in the third. Aliotti hit a single that drove in one run, and a throwing error committed by third baseman Scott Savastano allowed two more.
Trailing 8-4, the outfielder Dunigan attempted to spark a rally after belting a two-run home run with one out in the eighth inning, but the River Cats retired five of the next six Rainiers bats to end the season.
The Rainiers offense recorded 12 hits in the finale, led by Jones’ 3-for-3 effort. Triunfel went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Dunigan ended the day with two hits and two RBI.
Starter Andrew Carraway (6-8) was dealt the loss after surrendering eight runs - five earned - on 10 hits over 4.2 innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five in his 22nd start for the Rainiers this season.
Reliever Chance Ruffin limited Sacramento to one hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings. Logan Bawcom allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout over three innings of work out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers take a 213-day break before returning to action on April 3, 2014 when the team host its season opener against the Albuquerque Isotopes.
