TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Rainiers fell behind early and stayed there in an 8-4 loss to the Iowa Cubs at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.
The Rainiers found themselves trailing 5-0 through the game’s first two innings. Third baseman Mike Olt put the Cubs on top 2-0 with a two-run double in the first. Jae-Hoon Ha added a two-run double in the second that was followed by an RBI double hit by first baseman Brad Nelson two batters later.
Ha delivered a run-scoring single to put the Rainiers down 6-0 in the fourth inning, and Dave Sappelt was cleared to come home on a wild pitch thrown by pitcher Brian Sweeney that put the I-Cubs up 7-0 in the top of the seventh.
Tacoma made its way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of that same inning thanks to back-to-back home runs delivered by Joe Dunigan and Jason Jaramillo with one out. Dunigan’s solo shot was his second with Tacoma this season and Jaramillo’s blast was his first since June 25, 2012.
Trailing 8-2, the Rainiers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the ninth. Jaramillo plated Nate Tenbrink from third on a ground out, and then Dunigan scored from third on Carlos Triunfel’s ground out one at-bat later.
Outfielder Abraham Almonte went 3-for-4 with a double to lead a Rainiers lineup that combined to collect nine hits. Dunigan went 2-for-4 to record the club’s only other multi-hit effort, and Ty Kelly singled in the sixth to stretch his season-high hitting streak to nine games.
Taijuan Walker (2-2) was dealt the loss after surrendering five runs - three earned - on seven hits over three innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in his seventh start with the Rainiers this season.
The Rainiers (61-55) host the third game of a four-game series with Iowa (52-64) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, August 5. Right-hander Blake Beavan (4-4, 5.13) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against I-Cubs right-hander Justin Grimm (0-2, 11.57).
