RENO, Nev. – The Tacoma Rainiers rallied late but came up short in a 7-6 loss to the Reno Aces at Aces Ballpark on Monday. The defeat sealed a series loss for the Rainiers in the club’s final meeting with Reno of the season.
Tacoma overcame a 6-4 deficit after posting a two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning. Shortstop Robert Andino brought the Rainiers on a sacrifice fly that plated Jesus Montero. Second baseman Carlos Triunfel scored the equalizer on a throwing error committed by shortstop Chris Owings one batter later.
The score held only until the bottom of the ninth. Owings scored the go-ahead run for the Aces following a field error committed by the first baseman Montero with one out in the frame.
The Rainiers lineup combined to collect eight hits in the contest, led by outfielder Franklin Gutierrez’s 2-for-4 effort. Gutierrez, Andino, Carlos Peguero and Stefen Romero each turned in doubles.
Reliever Logan Bawcom (0-4) was on the mound when the winning run scored in the bottom of the ninth. The right-hander allowed just the one unearned run on one hit over one-third of an inning.
Hector Noesi, in his first start since being optioned to Tacoma from Seattle, held the Aces to four runs on nine hits over five innings. He struck out two and issued one walk in his ninth appearance and sixth start for the Rainiers this season.
The Rainiers (60-50) return to Cheney Stadium tomorrow, July 30, to begin an eight-game homestand featuring four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (July 30-August 2) and Iowa Cubs (August 3-6). Right-hander Taijuan Walker (2-0, 2.42) is slated to start for Tacoma in the opener against Omaha’s Brian Sanches (7-2, 3.44).
