Recap: The Mariners avoided a sweep by the Brewers with a 2-0 win at Safeco. Dustin Ackley got the first run off a wild pitch by Milwaukee’s Peralta and Justin Smoak’s solo home run (13) in the 5th gave the Mariners the 2nd run. They didn’t need much more than that with Felix Hernandez pitching 8 scoreless innings; striking out nine and walking one. Danny Farquhar got the save, his 4th of the season.
Turning point: The turning point came in the 3rd inning, when Dustin Ackley led things off with a double. Brendan Ryan moved him over to 3rd and a wild pitch by Peralta allowed Ackley to score. It was the first lead the Mariners have had in the series.
Player of the Game: The player of the game was Felix Hernandez without a doubt. His 8 shutout innings were the sole reason the Mariners won the game. Milwaukee had put up 20 runs in the previous two games, so the shutout was much needed.
What’s Next: The Mariners have Monday off and will travel to Tampa Bay to face the Rays. Tuesdays starters are Erasmo Ramirez (3-0, 7.13 ERA) for the Mariners and Chris Archer (6-4, 2.71 ERA) on the mound for the Rays.
Notes: Mariners manager Eric Wedge made another pre-game visit to the clubhouse today, it is unknown will he re-join the team full-time while he recovers from a mild stroke.
