Recap: The Mariners came away with a 6-3 win over the Athletics in 10 innings and a series win. Kendrys Morales came in to pinch hit in the 10th, hitting a walk-off home run on the first pitch he saw with two runners on and one out.
Oliver Perez got the win with two innings of work, giving up only one hit and striking out two batters. The pitching for the Mariners was successful for the majority of the game. Starting pitcher Bonderman got the no decision, going 5 and a third innings, giving up two hits before Danny Farquhar came on in relief with the bases loaded. Farquhar went two and two-thirds innings giving up one run on a solo home run to Brandon Moss that tied the game at 3 in the 8th.
Raul Ibanez led the team with two hits, a two-run home run and a solo home run. Mike Zunino also had two hits, and got on base three times, scoring on Morales’ game winning home run.
Turning Point: The turning point in the game came in the 10th inning when Mike Zunino made a heads up play that landed him on first base. Zunino had struck out, but the wild pitch from Balfour got away from catcher John Jaso and Zunino took off down the first base line. The throw by Jaso was off target and Zunino was safe, representing the game winning run. Michael Saunders then had a solid single that sent Zunino the third before Morales came up to the plate.
Player of the Game: The player of the game goes to two guys today-Raul Ibanez and his two home runs scored three runs for the Mariners giving them the lead for the majority of the game. The A’s tied it up in the 8th, and the game went into extra innings. Our second player of the game goes to Morales for the game winning three run bomb.
Next Up: The Mariners continue their home stand on Tuesday against the Pirates. Joe Saunders (5-7) takes the mound against Jeff Locke (6-1).
Other Notes: The Mariners signed 8th round draft pick Tyler Smith a shortstop out of Oregon State.
The walk-off win by Morales marked the 2nd of his career. The first came as an Angel facing Brandon League and the Mariners in 2010. Morales suffered a broken leg in the celebration at the plate.
Franklin Gutierrez left the game in the 6th with a strained/tight hamstring, an injury that hampered him earlier this season.
