PEORIA, Ariz. – The Seattle Mariners fell behind early and could not catch up, losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4 in front of 7,015 fans at Peoria Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Arizona broke open the game with three runs in the fourth inning.

Felix Hernandez (0-1) took the loss in his second start of the spring despite allowing only one hit, a one-out solo home run to Eric Hinske in the top of the second inning. Felix threw 38 pitches, 27 strikes, to 11 batters over 3.0 innings in his longest outing this spring.  Relievers Hector Noesi (3 runs) and Lucas Luetge (1 run) combined to allow four runs over 2.0 innings in relief, while Logan Bawcom (1.0), Bobby LaFromboise (1.0), Yoervis Medina (1.0) and Carson Smith (1.0) held the Diamondbacks scoreless over the final 4.0 innings in relief.

Third baseman Brad Miller (#1, 5th inning) hit his first home run, giving the Mariners 32 longballs in 17 games this spring to lead all teams (Cactus and Grapefruit League). The Mariners have now hit at least one home run in 16 of 17 games with 19 different players recording a homer.

The Diamondbacks took the early 4-0 lead thanks to an Eric Hinske solo home run in the second inning and a three-run homer by Mark Teahan in the top of the fourth inning. Seattle got on the board on a fielder’s choice RBI by Eric Thames. After trailing 5-1 in the fifth inning, shortstop Brendan Ryan and Miller each recorded a RBI to get Seattle within two runs. The Mariners rally fell short in the ninth after pulling to within one run after Miller scored on a fielding error.

The Mariners out-hit the Diamondbacks 9-8, with Miller (2x4, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI) and Thames (2x4, RBI) each recording multi-hit games.
