TEMPE, Ariz. – Right fielder Julio Morban went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs and four RBI to lead the Seattle Mariners to an 8-5 Cactus League victory over the Los Angeles Angels Friday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd of 9,662 at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
The Mariners improved their spring record to 13-7 with the victory, and capped the spring series vs. the Angels going 2-0.
Morban hit a two-run home run to start the scoring in the top of the second inning, and added another two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning. Justin Smoak hit his third home run of the spring, and Michael Saunders and Raul Ibañez each hit doubles.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Bonderman (2-0) earned the win allowing two runs over 4.0 innings. The right-hander struck out a pair, did not walk a batter and induced two groundball double plays. Relief pitchers Andrew Carraway (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R), Carson Smith (1.0 IP, K) and Bobby LaFromboise (1.0 IP, H, BB) turned in scoreless efforts out of the bullpen.
The Mariners (13-7) will host The Netherlands in a World Baseball Classic exhibition game tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Peoria Stadium. The game vs. The Netherlands will be broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle with Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith calling the action. Jon Garland (1-0, 1.50) is slated to start the evening game vs. The Netherlands.
Seattle returns to Cactus League play tomorrow with a road game vs. the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale (Radio – 710 ESPN Seattle). Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to make his four appearance and second spring start vs. Rockies right-hander Chris Volstad (0-0, 1.29)
