“The allegations against Milton Bradley were thoroughly investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office. Both agencies determined there was no basis to file charges and no charges were filed.
“As is customary in domestic cases, the City Attorney's Office has scheduled a private meeting with Milton and his wife to make sure that this type of misunderstanding does not occur again.
“Milton and his wife and children all reside together as a family and request that the media respect their wish that the matter remain personal and private. In fact, I have instructed my client not to discuss his relationship with his wife except at the private conference with the city attorney and with a marital counselor.”
-Cliff Lee threw 63 pitches in a bullpen session this afternoon. He'll throw a 3 to 4 inning simulation game on Friday. If all goes well Friday, the team will send Lee out on one minor league rehab assignment.
-Erik Bedard will throw in the bullpen Friday.
Opening Day #2
Tuesday 04-13-2010 4:34pm PT
That's what I am choosing to call it. This is Opening Day, take two. Why? Well, for a few reasons; some of them personal, some of them for the good of the team.
For the team, I think it is a good idea to just pretend that yesterday never happened. Forget that we only got 2 hits against Justin Duchscherer. Forget that we failed to score at least 3 runs for the 5th time in 8 games. Forget the error that Milton Bradley made in left. Forget it all.
Personally, I am choosing to forget yesterday because it is the first opening day that I have missed in as many years as I can remember. But as Jason Puckett points out, no one cares about me...and why would they.
Anyway, as much as the team and I, would like to forget about yesterday, and the previous 7 games for that matter, pretty much every credible Mariners media outlet is pretty keyed into just how bad this start has been.
Here is a short list of links to local newspaper articles and blogs that all point out in various ways, just how bad it's been so far.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I see a theme in all of these headlines. Okay, so we know we can't hit...what are we going to do about it? There have been rumors swirling today about the possible acquisition of Jermaine Dye. Geoff Baker spoke about it a bit, and sort of shot the idea down, in his talk with Mitch in the Morning this morning on KJR. Listen here.
A few other outlets spoke about Dye, Dave Cameron of USSMariner.com had a nice peice on Dye, as did a number of other national baseball blogs like Hardballtalk.com and hotstove.com.
As a bit of an aside, but still on the topic of Jermaine Dye, Minnesota Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson quipped that guys like Dye and Gary Sheffield maybe without jobs due to racism. Here is a quote from Hudson,
"You see guys like Jermaine Dye without a job. Guy with [27 home runs
and 81 RBIs] and can't get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there,
no? You've got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5,
$6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can't get a job. A guy like
Gary Sheffield, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can't get a job. We both
know what it is. You'll get it right. You'll figure it out. I'm not
gonna say it because then I'll be in [trouble]."
Read the rest of the article here at USAToday.com. I would be quick to point out that Mariners went out and signed a number of African American players this off-season, including the controversial Milton Bradley, so I think it's safe to say that race has nothing to do with the Mariners personel decisions. Nevertheless, it's always interesting when players bring up race as motivation for teams signing or not signing players.
Opening day is underway.....

4th inning.....Silva's luck ran out of luck...Howie Kendrick scored from third on a ground-out from Vlad Guerrero. Kendrick reached base after he was hit and took third on a double by Abreu. The pitch by Abreu was a changeup, that didn't change.
Seattle looked like they were going to get a two-run HR from Jose Lopez in the bottom half. Lopez swung at the first pitch from Loux but Abreu went all the way to the wall to make the grab. Branyan was on base after a single to right. 3rd inning....Silva has another 1-2-3 inning - he's pitching fantastic! Through three innings, Silva has pitched just 36 pitches. Only three of his balls have left the infield.
However, Loux has settled down and Seattle has just one hit since Jr. had a single in the first. 2nd inning.....Another 1-2-3 inning for Carlos Silva. The last batter he faced he struck out Kendry Morales on a 93mph fastball swinging.
Shane Loux was able to settle down for the Angels after giving up a run in the first. He retired the side in the second. Lopez and Johjima grounded out and Gutierrez struck out swinging. 1st inning.....Great start for Silva in the top of the first, three up and three down and Silva uses just 13 pitches. Both Figgins and Kendrick grounded out. That's a good sign if he's getting ground outs early.
Griffey being Griffey! After Endy Chavez grounded out and Ronny Cedeno earned a walk, Griffey ripped a single down the left field line. Cedeno went from first to third.

News/Notes from the Safe...
- Seattle is 20-12 all-time in season openers and this marks the 33rd time that the M's have played the Angels in the season opener. Last year wasn't pretty for the Mariners in their 19 games against their rivals as they went 5-14, including 3-7 at Safeco Field.
- It's just the fifth time that the Mariners have five wins in their first seven games of the season. The other years were: 1985, 2001, 2009 and 1984, but in '84 they were 6-1.
- Pitching and defense have been the key for the Mariners in the first seven games of the season....the M's have the best ERA in the American League (2.92). Their starters are third in the AL with a 3.16 ERA. And, you wouldn't know it with the blow up of Brandon Morrow in his first save opportunity, but the M's actually lead the Majors with four saves - pretty remarkable. Okay, we've talked about the pitching, what about the defense? The M's did not commit an error during the first four games of the season.
- But it hasn't been all pitching and defense, the offense has actually been a surprise...the M's are hitting .381 with runners in scoring position, that leads the AL. In addition, Seattle has scored 11 of their 32 runs with two outs - that is an amazing statistic.
- Could be a milestone for Ken Griffey Jr. today...if Jr's next home run will be his #400 of his Mariners career. When he does achieve that feat, Griffey will become the first ever player to hit 400 home runs with one team and 200 with another team.
- Even though Griffey hasn't hit the ball all that well, but he does have a .381 on-base perentage, second-highest on the team (Chavez, .481).
Stay tuned...I'll have the lineups as soon as they are out...
It's around 10 a.m. at the ballpark and here is what it looks like at this moment...
An empty clubhouse, however, in about three hours this will be packed
