MONTLAKE - The Washington Huskies were inside the Dempsey Indoor Center and worked out in shoulder pads and shorts for their eighth practice Monday as spring practice passed the halfway point.
DT Danny Shelton kicked out briefly after drilling RB Jesse Callier in a team period. Head coach Steve Sarkisian sent Shelton off the field where he had to be tracked down by DE Hau'oli Jamora and DE Talia Crichton, who were not practicing Monday.
Shelton saw some time with strength coach Ivan Lewis on the side before returning to participation in practice.
"It’s football. It’s just football," Sarkisian said.
Crichton sat out with a knee injury from the scrimmage Saturday but Sarkisian said it wasn't considered serious.
CB Greg Ducre was back from a concussion but was in a red no-contact jersey. LB Scott Lawyer (groin) and C Drew Schaefer (knee) were still out. S Sean Parker was back Saturday at the scrimmage from an ankle injury.
The defense shows signs of improvement in affecting the quarterbacks in the pocket and batting down passes. The offense was unable to score during a period working on two-minute drills.
Walk-on K Erik Nothstein hits all his field goal attempts in team drills going 5 for 5. Walk-on LS David Butler handled the snapping duties.
S James Sample, S Travis Feeney, and FB/LB Cooper Pelluer remain in red non-contact jerseys with shoulder injuries.
WR Kevin Smith (knee), RB/LB Ryan McDaniel (knee), RB Deontae Cooper (knee), Jamora (knee), LB Alec Kimble (foot), OL Colin Tanigawa (knee) and DT Semisi Tokolahi (foot) remain unable to practice and likely won't during the duration of spring practice.
McDaniel appeared to be wearing a bulkier cast during practice today and Sarkisian said he had a clean up procedure done on his injured knee.
"We had to go in there and clean some things up. It’s nothing serious," Sarkisian said.
