There has been a ton of discussion in regards to what Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett had to say about Saints’ tight end Jimmy Graham in our postgame interview on Q13 Fox Saturday night. The piece that is posted on YouTube is focused on Bennett calling Graham “overrated” and that is getting a lot of attention. In fact, 20,000 hits already, just on the YouTube page alone!
But what isn’t posted online, and won’t be due to rights issues, is Bennett talking before that sound bite about how the Seahawks defense took exception to what they believed was a deliberate attempt to target, and possibly injure Percy Harvin. The video doesn’t lie, and in fact backs up Bennett’s claims.
The outspoken Seahawks’ DE told me the defense noticed, and the NFL is a fraternity of sorts that while playing hard, needs to at the same time work to protect each other as well. THAT is what was more important in terms of the interview in my mind. The Saints came out with an attitude and agenda, and in the end, it backfired when the best defense in the NFL took exception to what the Saints defenders were doing.
I am a Michael Bennett fan. Not just as a football player on the field, but as an accountable athlete off the field too. He sticks up for his teammates, and is accountable to the fans and media win or lose. Guys like Bobby Wagner, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Earl Thomas, KJ Wright, and Kam Chancellor, along with Bennett have been willing to talk on live tv with us all year, win or lose. Doing an interview after a win is easy. After a loss? Not so much.
Michael Bennett has been the most consistent defensive lineman this season for the Hawks. His leadership has blossomed as well. If they make the Super Bowl, he will be one of the main reasons why, and it is also why locking him up long term also must be a priority in the offseason.
It is also why the fine management at Q13 Fox better get his jersey in our postgame locker room studio by Sunday!
