T-Birds Take Another Tight One From ‘Tips

T-Birds Take Another Tight One From ‘Tips

With his 37th goal of the year, Josh Winquist also registered his 200th career point on a first-period powerplay.  Rookie Patrick Bajkov recorded his 7th goal of the season and Matt Pufahl extended his point streak to seven games with an assist for Everett.  The ‘Tips were 22-0 this year when leading after two periods, but surrendered a pair of goals in the third on this night despite an 11-4 shot edge in the last 20 minutes.

The Silvertips looked good in the first and scored the only goal of the period on the powerplay to take a 1-0 lead.  Matt Pufahl set up Josh Winquist for a one-timer that beat Taran Kozun just inside the left post for the goal at 7:26.  Everett didn’t allow the Thunderbirds a shot on goal until the 9:50 mark and finished the period with a 12-6 shot edge and a 1-0 lead.

Seattle tied the game in the second with a shorthanded goal from Sam McKechnie, who won a footrace and snuck a shot off Austin Lotz and just inside the far post.  Everett answered only 23 seconds later on the remainder of the same powerplay when Patrick Bajkov batted in the rebound of a Carson Stadnyk shot to restore the Silvertips lead.  The ‘Tips were outshot 9-6 in the second, but took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room.

The Thunderbirds tied the game again early in the third when Russell Maxwell carried the puck in and fired a shot through traffic over the shoulder of Lotz.  Seattle then took the lead midway through the third during 4-on-4 play as Adam Henry cut to the middle from the boards and lifted a perfectly-placed backhand shot into the top corner to make it 3-2 T-Birds.  Everett pulled Lotz for an extra attacker and threatened to get the equalizer in the final minutes, but the buzzer sounded before the ‘Tips could draw even.

Goaltender Austin Lotz (20-18-3-1) turned away 16 of 19 shots faced as Everett finished with a 29-19 shot advantage.  Seattle’s Taran Kozun (16-21-2-1) made 27 saves in the victory. The Silvertips finished 2 for 5 on the powerplay while the T-Birds were 0 for 2.
