Mariners pull off 3-1 over the Astros - May 22, 2014

 

Recap:  The Mariners took game one of the 4 game series with a 3-1 win over the Astros.  Roenis Elias started on the mound for the Mariners, going 5 and 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, walking 4 and striking out 6.  Jarrod Cosart started for the Astros, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, also with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts.  Dominic Leone put in 1 2/3 innings of work, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2.  He picked up the win, his first in the majors.  The game was locked at 1 through 6 innings, until a Michael Saunders blooper with the bases loaded, scored two runs for the Mariners.


Turning Point: The turning point in the game came in the 7th inning when Dustin Ackley and Stefan Romero led off with singles. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Nick Franklin walked to load the bases.  Michael Saunders came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs and hit a blooper beating out the play at 1st.  Ackley and Romero scored to the give the Mariners a 3-1 lead. The play was reviewed and upheld.


Player of the Game:  The player of the game has to go to the pitching staff as a whole.  While it was a bit rough at times for Elias, he put together a solid outing, and was followed by Leone, Medina and Rodney, who together gave up 1 hit and sealed the win.  On the offensive side, credit goes to Michael Saunders as well, for his 2 RBI single that gave the Mariners the lead and the win.


What’s Next: The Mariners host the Astros Friday night in game two of the four-game series.  The King, Felix Hernandez (5-1, 2.94 ERA) gets the start for the Mariners.   Brad Peacock (1-4, 5.20 ERA) is on the mound for the Astros.


Other Notes:  Logan Morrison will begin his rehab stint in Tacoma tomorrow night.
Pitcher, James Paxton is slated to make a rehab start in Tacoma on Saturday night.
