MARINERS DROP FIRST GAME OF SPLIT DH, 8-2 TO ROYALS

PEORIA, Ariz. – Robinson Cano was 3-for-3 and Justin Smoak was 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and a sacrifice fly, but Seattle fell to the Kansas City Royals by an 8-2 score in front of 4,983 fans Monday afternoon at Peoria Stadium.

The Mariners dropped to 10-4 in Cactus League play. Seattle plays the second game of a day-night, split-squad doubleheader tonight at the Arizona Diamondbacks (7-6-2) at Salt River Fields.

Second baseman Robinson Cano was 3-for-3 in his first game action since March 5. He missed the previous four days following a root canal.

Justin Smoak, in the line-up as the designated hitter, hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to give Seattle a 1-0 lead in the first, and later added a double and a run scored.

Seattle’s offense could not come back from a Kansas City Royals five-run outburst in the third inning that snapped a 1-1 tie.

Starting pitcher Brandan Maurer (0-1) allowed a two out run in the second inning that tied the score at 1-1. He retired the first two batters he faced in the third, but was lifted after allowing three straight two-out singles. Minor leaguer Stephen Shackleford entered in relief, but battled his control and ended up allowing five runs to cross the plate (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 SO).

Yoervis Medina continued his impressive spring with 2.0 shutout innings; he has yet to allow an earned run, and Ramon Ramirez also tossed a clean frame.

The Mariners (10-4) play the second game of their split-squad, day-night doubleheader tonight at the Arizona Diamondbacks (7-6-2) at Salt River Fields in North Scottsdale (7:05 pm). LH James Paxton (0-0, 0.00) will start against D-backs LH Patrick Corbin (0-1, 4.50). The game will be broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle with Aaron Goldsmith, Mike Blowers and Dave Sims on the call.

The Mariners return to Cactus League action tomorrow with a road game at the Los Angeles Angels at Tempe Diablo Stadium (1:05 pm). RH Scott Baker (1-0, 1.80) will make his third spring start against Angels LH C.J. Wilson. The game will be televised live on the MLB Network in the Pacific Northwest.
